Finally, your professional CV is approved and you are invited to an interview. The importance of punctuality is absolutely paramount for your success.
The importance of punctuality on the interview day cannot be stressed enough. What is punctuality on the ladder of importance for interview day? Well, you can’t get in the game unless you start the engine. If you are late, you might as well shut off the engine and go home. There are other repercussions if you are not punctual that affect your ability to present effectively. Emergencies and surprises can arise You want to demonstrate your dependability and punctuality right off the bat with the interviewer. Nothing says it better that you are the right choice than being early. Hey, we all know that emergencies and surprises can arise. I will speak to several scenarios that could upset the old apple cart. I can assure you that I have seen and heard it all in my 20+ years of interviewing. You think all my 1000+ interviews got off to a rosy start? I think not. Policemen hear all the stories why people speed and I have heard all the excuses why someone is late. I applaud their creativity, but question their commitment. We all demand and respect punctuality in the workplace, so why not start here? You can alleviate this concern and eliminate this undue by planning ahead. Do you know the location of where to meet. -Can you do a test drive a day or two before? -Is ample parking available or are spots hard to find? -Is a long walk involved? -How much time do you need to drive to the meeting place? -If the interview is in a hotel, can you visit ahead of time and actually walk the premises? -Do you have a cell phone number of the interviewer in case you cannot find them? Most importantly did you confirm the location with the hiring manager or the recruiter? This advance planning speaks to the importance of first impression and being punctual is the first step. Remember, I have been on both sides and therefore realize the importance of punctuality and the downside of a late arrival. Listen, you have been preparing for a job interview and investing your precious time, so don’t let it all go up in smoke on the interview day. This is your day and you deserve this opportunity. Mutual respect is vital in any relationship and this situation is no different. They respectfully gave you the time to present and therefore respect their time and be punctual.
